Abstract

Entrepreneurship education has become an important instrument for promoting economic diversification, innovation and sustainable development, particularly in regions experiencing structural and socio-economic challenges. This analytical opinion paper examines the advancement of entrepreneurship education in the Niger Delta, a region characterised by abundant natural resources but persistent unemployment, underdevelopment, insecurity and environmental degradation. Drawing on relevant Nigerian and international literature, policy perspectives and scholarly discussions, the paper examines the role of entrepreneurship education in integrating business knowledge, digital skills and experiential approaches to prepare graduates for enterprise creation and sustainable employment. The analysis identifies major challenges affecting entrepreneurship education in the Niger Delta, including infrastructural deficits, inadequate funding, weak pedagogical practices, adverse socio-economic conditions, insecurity, negative cultural perceptions and limited industry linkages. It proposes context-specific strategies including investment in entrepreneurship laboratories and ICT facilities, sustainable funding mechanisms, capacity development for educators, curriculum alignment with local economic value chains, cultural reorientation and stronger industry–academia partnerships. The analysis argues that although relevant policies and institutional frameworks exist, implementation gaps continue to limit the transformative potential of entrepreneurship education. The paper concludes that repositioning entrepreneurship education in the Niger Delta requires a practical, digitally enabled, context-sensitive and collaborative approach capable of promoting youth empowerment, enterprise sustainability and regional development.
