CHAPTER 23 : APPLYING A LEARNING THEORY ON THE EFFECT OF ANXIETY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF MUSIC STUDENTS IN TARI-PET SECONDARY SCHOOL.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effects of anxiety on the academic performance of music students in Tari-pet Secondary School and recommends strategies for combating the problems by applying a suitable learning theory. The data collected through questionnaires were analyzed. Findings indicate that a considerable number of pupils were affected by anxiety leading to poor academic performance. The problem of anxiety differed across ages and sex among music students in TariPet. In addition to that, the study revealed that school rules, teachers' practices, behaviours, corporal punishment, as well as pupils' irresponsibility were the causes of anxiety disorders experienced by the pupils. The majority of the pupils in schools have frequently experienced anxiety disorders and psychologists feel that these are psychological problems which could be cured through the provision of proper learning theory, guidance, and counselling, creating friendly environments and provision of materials for a study like musical instruments to pupils. To carry out the investigation, the researcher formulated some questionnaire items which were administered to the students and also suggested that a learning theory by Dr B.F Skinner which is "Operant Conditioning" which has to do with reinforcement, should be applied in teaching music to help curb the effect of anxiety in Tari-Pet secondary school.
